When will the ignorance cease?

Today I had the unfortunate duty of dealing with first rate ignorance around gay rights and sexism. The argument proved to be a long and endearing one which in the end I know that I taught at least one person something, which was the original culprit of misguided vocabulary. My personal war against ignorance began around 9 this morning on facebook over a well known picture that I have seen before, and have always supported. By the end of the fight I came to two conclusions. One: All people should be required to take a class in BOTH High School AND College (if both are attended) about equality and human rights. Until this requirement is fulfilled mass amounts of people will continue thinking they are living a blissful life filled with ignorance. Which brings me to point two: Even if you are well informed it doesn’t matter, all you may be trying to do is educate the people who are so remarkably wrong, yet when your point is thus proven they cry like little children who don’t get their way. It astounding that all I was doing was trying to educate a person on something they claim to know knowledge on, and yet I was the bad person. Although all of my information is correct and has been learned in classes that have taught me about equality and human rights, they are the ones who are looked on upon like heroes, while I, the villain. Their comments were liked, while I was scorned as a “massive bitch” and just rude. The following is the picture (which I support) and the conversation that transpired throughout the day.

The caption that started it all was “Shared from a friend 🙂 tolerance & acceptance”

ME- Tolerance: To agree with in allowing the right of something one does not approve of. Thus, if you are FOR gay rights, tolerance would had been the wrong choice of word for you to use. Acceptance and tolerance are not synonyms, and writing the word Tolerance just screams “I do not believe what you are doing is right, but I’m going to tolerate it and look the other way although your love truly disgusts me.”

ORIGINAL POSTER– lol i get what you are saying but my message is to others… I am fully in acceptance.

ME-Then just say “acceptance,” or”Acceptance from me, and tolerance from the people who find acceptance against their beliefs.”
That way you actually sound like you know what you’re talking about

*Richard* Well the one girl is a blonde 😛

ORIGINAL POSTER-I do know what I’m talking about lol!

*Richard* correct blondes are evil….I should know…I date one 🙂 *Tag girlfriend*

ME we are not evil, we just cant tolerate ignorance.

*Richard* Ignorance of what

ME of anything about gay rights.

*Richard* hmpf…rights…they are people. They wanna be joined in marriage go ahead. They want kids whatever, it’s fine with me. Im pretty sure at the beginning of the last century women, and minorities had political and social handicaps. It is just something that will fade as generations are born and dies as with the previously mentioned groups.

ORIGINAL POSTER So you are calling me ignorant because you assumed I didn’t know what the difference between tolerance and acceptance is? Anyone who knows me knows that I am very accepting to all differences in everyone! I would hardly call me ignorant. I don’t use words that I don’t understand. You can troll someone else’s post now.

*Richard* My concern is people worry about petty issues such as this instead of just letting them live their lives, instead of worrying about the truly significant concerns in this world. Like…the rapidly declining education system, the national debt, the unemployment rate, the fact that we have cut more than 50% of our military funding, and all of our funding towards NASA (which btw has done more for this country than almost any other government agency). So, yeah, I am just more worried that most students in southern states (namely the Appalachia regions) have difficulty in college, and we have an ever increasing amount of foreign TA’s in our math and science based fields…it doesn’t bode well for america. Just saying…sorry to explode your wall tori.

ME First- *Richard*, if you understood anything at all, you would understand that I am FOR gay rights, more so then most people. Second- women are still suffering a pay wage gap, we are getting paid 72-76 cents to the mans dollar. Third- if people would have never fought for those rights then it would have never “fade as generations are born and dies as with the previously mentioned groups.” Fourth- If you would had known the difference between the words and seen that they cannot be used interchangeably or as synonyms then you wouldn’t have used it improperly, because using them in your post contradicts yourself. And I wouldn’t have to troll you if you weren’t so incredibly wrong.

*Richard* Well first JACKI….I have degrees in Social and Environmental Geography…which are composites of Social Studies fields…to include: Sociology, Psychology, History, Poli-Sci, Environmental Studies, Conservation, so yeah…I think I know what I am talking about….not to mention I am also studying Mechanical Engineering (unrelated but…). Additionally, I will not speak of the wage gap…can not say much for that, however, most women are in fact eligible for maternal leave…most men in a business position are not…on a sociological stance I find it interesting that most women expect a man to pay for dinner and be chivalrous to them, yet the expect the same treatment in the business world (not complaining about this….more of just an observation of social norms). I would also say this country has come a very long way since it was established in 1776, and far further than most countries world wide (minus several european nations). You complain about 75 cents on a dollar, that will likely resolve itself in time. In the middle east a women could be stoned to death for wearing clothes that are “too reveling”. I’m not saying anything toward your stance on gay rights, but, to say that this is the nations most pressing issue or I know nothing of the nations social status (or global status) would be a wholly short sighted statement.

ME Well FIRST *Richard*. You obviously see that you have lost this battle considering you are using the classic “I’m losing I must distract her by bringing other topics to the table that have nothing to do with the current argument because this will some how validate my original point and because I know more information on these topics then the topic that is really at hand” trick. So although I would like to ignore the rest of your oblivious indirect argument, I cannot.
SECOND *Richard*, there is no need to bring in what the hell you’re going to school for, because if I sat here and listed my course list in the matter that a snobby wasp like you did, you too would see that I have credentials in the area’s of not only women’s rights but rights for all people, especially the LGBT community (which let us remember that is our original conflict here). So I think that I would actually know more about women’s rights then you would. Which if you were to look at my blog, you would see that I tackle women’s rights quite often and am very educated in the topic, although my grammar is not perfect in my blog.
THIRD *Richard*, and most likely my last question for you is ARE YOU A WOMAN? To my knowledge you have male genital therefore a male social standing in today’s world. I am not saying that women have it the worst in our country, by far that is not my statement at all. Merely that we still have many obstacles to conquer and the world has not yet come to terms with how women should be treated. And since you are knocking down my pure fact that there is a pay wage gap, how would you feel if you were a woman doing the same job as a man and getting paid nearly a quarter less? I’m sure you would be upset if you had the same education and do the same amount of work as the opposite sex yet did not get paid the same.
LASTLY *Richard*, Do not put words in the mouth of others, like claiming I said “this is the nations most pressing issue” because I did not. But personally I do think that basic human rights and equality shouldn’t be and issue, because they are RIGHTS, not “issues” one should not need to vote on or make laws against or around them. Every person born of this earth should have equal RIGHTS and they should not be an issue to be sought upon but they are. So saying that it IS NOT a pressing issue to be granted the same right as another person of a different sexual orientation or sex is ignorant statement on your part.

*Richards’s GF*Hey Jacki. We all respect that you have your own opinions, but you don’t have to be a massive bitch about it okay? Seriously. No one here is trying to fight you, I don’t know why you jumped on Tori’s shit in the first place acting like a stuck up know it all. Go be happy with your opinions and leave people alone. You’re just rude.

ME I’m rude because I’m right, right? Also Tori and I have already sorted things out, and all your comment says to me is “HEYYYY stop picking on my boyfriendddddd” and that you yourself are dating someone who doesn’t know shit about your own sexes right’s.

  • *Richard*First…my point was gay rights will improve as time progresses…as with any issue society is slow to adapt that will never change. Second as for womens rights: In the last 100 years womens rights have vastly improved…and I agree 100 percent that if a women has the same job/responsibilities she should be paid the same, but do not say a 100 pound girl can carry a 200 pound person out of a burning building then complain they didn’t get hired as a fire fighter…or say they have equal right. I do not believe jacki that you are required to sign up for selective services (ie if an emergency draft is initiated which is still in the constitution I can be drafted)…I am. If I do not I can even get student loans. So before you start spouting ur opinions to everyone try doing it in a respectful manner. I was talking and discussing not rallying for a cause. Thank you. Be proud of what and who you are…america will accept you it just has to adapt. Name calling and being rude only doesn’t make society like the issue anymore. At no point have a disagreed with you…you jumped down my throat for simply making a comment.

  • MEBecause I was the first to jump. I was the one putting words in my mouth right? I disagree.

  • *Richard**can’t get loans
  • ME–  Also you still seem to neglect one of my first points, that nothing changes unless we try to change it. We can just sit back and wait for gays to get rights, we have to fight for them and with them. Otherwise nothing is accomplished, and that is what I was trying to say from the beginning.
  • ME Actually I wasn’t TRYING. I did say that. you just never seemed to have listened to that.

Regardless of his last post, the man still does not seem to understand any of my points. One of the first being “Nothing will get better unless we fight for it, which was, and will hopefully be my last comment.

Again, the world would be a better place if we were all forced to take an equality and human rights class in our lives.

OH and then this happened.

  • *Richard* Listened to what? I’ve been agreeing with you and simply using womens rights as a comparison…I only saw you being argumentative and insulting

  • *Richard*And actually actively petitioning does less than just accepting it. I’m am more accepting of gays and minorities than any previous generartion in my family…I have never once stood on a street corner with a sign screaming about this isn’t fair. Hardlining is good for changing policies…but it doesn’t make anyone more or less accepting of a change…only time changes that.

  • METhird- if people would have never fought for those rights then it would have never “fade as generations are born and dies as with the previously mentioned groups.”AND the only reason i became argumentative and insulting is, regardless if you meant to or not, that is what you started with the comment that began with “They want kids whatever, it’s fine with me. Im pretty sure at the beginning of the last century women, and minorities had political and social handicaps. It is just something that will fade as generations are born and dies as with the previously mentioned groups.” and especially with “My concern is people worry about petty issues such as this instead of just letting them live their lives, instead of worrying about the truly signif” You were diverting the conversation to something unrelated and flaunting whatever classes you have taken to help “prove your point”

  • ME And in order to “change” your main point of “time=acceptance” there first NEEDS to be a change.
